Why this temple matters
Birthplace of Andal, the only woman among the twelve Alvar saints, whose Thiruppavai is sung across Tamil homes and temples every Margazhi. The temple's tower is the emblem of the Tamil Nadu government.
The story
Periyalvar found a baby girl in the temple garden and raised her as his daughter. She wore the garlands meant for the Lord before they were offered, and the Lord accepted them gladly. Andal longed to marry Ranganatha and is said to have merged with him at Srirangam.
