Darshan of the goddess
The lingam with the golden line, and the goddess before it. Early morning, before the day's crowds arrive from the coast, is the temple's own hour.
The goddess of the Kodachadri hills
01 OVERVIEW
Deep in a valley of the Kodachadri hills, beside the clear Souparnika river, stands Kollur Mookambika, one of the most powerful Devi shrines of the South. Here the goddess is worshipped as Mookambika, the slayer of the demon Mookasura, and the sanctum holds a rare form: a swayambhu lingam with a golden line through its heart, the left half the gods' energies, the right half the goddess's own, Shiva and Shakti in one stone.
Adi Shankaracharya is woven into this temple's story. Tradition says he meditated at Kodachadri above the valley, had his vision of the goddess here, and installed the Sri Chakra at her shrine. The goddess of Kollur has been a protector of artists, writers and students ever since, and the Chandika Homa here is among the most sought-after fire rituals in the region.
The valley completes the temple: the Souparnika's cold bathing pools, the forest rising to Kodachadri peak, and the peace of a shrine that, for all its fame, still belongs to its hills.
02 THE STORY
The legend says the demon Mookasura won such power through penance that the gods could not touch him, and his hunger grew until the goddess was born of their combined energy. She struck him dumb, mooka, the wordless one, and slew him, taking the name Mookambika. The golden line through the lingam records the union of powers that made her.
Shankaracharya's tradition here is cherished: he is said to have seen the goddess in vision on Kodachadri, begged her to come with him, and heard her condition that she would follow if he never looked back. When the sound of her anklets stopped at this valley, he turned, and here she stayed. The Sri Chakra he installed is worshipped at her shrine to this day.
03 THE SACRED SPACE
The temple stands in the coastal Malnad style, gold-plated over the sanctum, with the courtyard, the flagstaff and the shrines of the guardian deities around it. The sanctum holds the swayambhu lingam with its golden line, and before it the image of the goddess and Shankaracharya's Sri Chakra.
Behind the temple, the Souparnika river runs over smooth rock into bathing pools, said to carry the herbs of the hills in its waters. Above everything rises Kodachadri, one of the highest peaks of Karnataka, its slopes thick with forest.
04 WHAT TO EXPERIENCE
The lingam with the golden line, and the goddess before it. Early morning, before the day's crowds arrive from the coast, is the temple's own hour.
The river pools behind the temple, cold and clear, where pilgrims bathe before darshan.
The peak above, reached by jeep track through the forest, with the Sarvajna Peetha where Shankara meditated and a view that runs to the Arabian Sea on a clear day.
The temple's great fire ritual, performed daily; families book it for blessings and we arrange it as part of the yatra.
Aarti at dusk, the hills going dark, and the sound of the river. Stay the night rather than driving out.

07 WITH TIRTHASEVA
Devi as the power that silenced the demon, worshipped in a valley of the western ghats where Adi Shankara had his vision of her.
On a TirthaSeva yatra, darshan here is planned, not queued blindly: the right hour, the right gate, the ritual bookings made ahead, a stay chosen for rest, and a SahaYatri handling the day so you can simply be present. Tell us your dates and who is travelling, and we will shape the route around this temple and the ones that belong with it.
