Why this temple matters
Kumbakonam is a dense cluster of ancient temples in the Kaveri delta. It is the base for the Navagraha circuit, nine temples each linked to one of the planets, which many families visit for remedies and blessings. Swamimalai, one of Murugan's six abodes, is just outside town.
The story
At the end of an age, Brahma's pot (kumbha) of nectar and seeds of creation floated here on the flood. Shiva broke it with an arrow, and where the nectar fell the Mahamaham tank was formed. The town is named after that pot.
